My Experience As An Emcee on 9th December
December 12, 2006 by kahhwee
This should be the very first time that I am obligated to blog about a specific event — my experience being a wedding dinner emcee for about 15 minutes. This job was assigned while the groom was drunk. But a promise is still a promise, so I am accomplishing my promise now.
Half a year ago, the groom (I’ve always been treating him as my brother), who is also my guardian in Singapore, has mentioned that he may need my help to read out some love story or love letter thingy during his wedding dinner. I always thought it’d be some pre-recorded stuff and no one will know whose voice is that. So I promised him very quickly because, as you know, I always like to have this kind of interesting new experience, and I was quite confident that I could do a pretty good job.
After my A-level, I started my preparation. Preparing and practicing the speech. What I had to read was supposedly a music diary written by the bride to the groom, as a surprise. Yup, you are feeling weird now. It’s the groom that requested me to do the job!!! It’s definitely not a surprise anymore during the wedding dinner.
I told the groom, the organizer of his wedding dinner, I’d use mp3 player to record my voice but the seemingly perfectionist groom insisted to record the speech in studio if I want. Wow~ studio? A bit troublesome, isn’t it? He preferred I read the music diary on the spot because it’d catch more attention. That’s why in the end I agreed to read it on the spot.
I didn’t know I had become part of the committee of the wedding dinner preparation until the night before the dinner. I went to his house for rehearsal, and wow, there’re also many other ‘committee members’ there. All are his relatives, by the way, except me, but I’ve been treating them as my relatives since young. There were other 2 emcees for the dinner (one for Chinese and another for English), a few coordinators (including his sister and sister-in-law), audio & visual controller, general managers, etc.
Hey, I didn’t know that wedding preparation is such a troublesome matter! Anyway, I am happy that I learnt something new. I really take all these as a learning experience. So the groom, acting like the organizer, started briefing us. When and how the flower girls should come out, when and what slides have to be shown, with what songs or background music, etc. I was actually very impressed by the willingness of the family members and relatives to help out, as well as the unity they showed.
After the traditional wedding ceremony held in my hometown Kuala Pilah, we departed to KL for the wedding dinner. I wasn’t told that I’d get the professional make-up and hair-styling service until I did. Then we proceeded to the restaurant that the dinner was going to held. We went one hour earlier as the organizer wanted a rehearsal there. We didn’t have any, however, because there’re just so many other preparations had to be done there. Fortunately, everything went smoothly despite some hiccups on the audio & video presentation.
Before my turn to speak on the stage, I dared not have any food or drink besides warm water although I was already starving. Finally it was my turn~ I just did it like how I practiced usually but I could do better, I think. When I looked back the video of me speaking on the stage, I thought my eye contact was bad because I had to look at my script very often since I didn’t memorized at all. Luckily, the groom (my boss) was very pleased and satisfied with my performance. He said it exceeded his expectation. He kept saying “well done” to me as he was already drunk. That’s when he requested me to post this blog and I said yes.
Unexpectedly, this turned out to be another crazy night. I thought I would have plenty of time to rest after the exhausting days in Singapore but I was wrong. Another crazy and exhausting day here. I went for a midnight karaoke with some of the relatives of nearer age. 12am to 4am but I was late for an hour. I was a bit high because I drank some beer to keep myself warm. It didn’t seem to have effect until we went back. Only then I felt super hot. Then we played cards until 5++am. After waking up around 10am, we went for a movie (Dejavo) at 11.45am. Really wonder when I can start resting at home…
